Location: About 2nm W of South Wonston, W of the A272 in the vicinity of Crawley Down Wood very roughly 4nm NW of Winchester city centre

NOTES: A look at this site on Google Earth makes for a very interesting study. The bend SW of 06/24 is of such an angle that it would seem reasonable to treat these as two seperate runways, although part of the length of both at the join could easily be negotiated at low speed at the start or end of a take-off or landing run.  


The AAIB report EW/G2010/09/20 states there is just one runway and that is 07/25. A report in the November 2011 issue of Light Aviation magazine appears to confirm that only one runway exists, 07/25 – presumably?

The report on a Fly-In at the end of August 2011 makes interesting reading. “Barton Ashes is an interesting strip to the uninitiated, the normal approach being through a gap in ever-growing trees, avoiding the small ‘quarry’ on the right, only then to be confronted with a downslope and a 30° left turn about halfway down – everybody has managed successfully up to now. One attendee in 2010 who didn’t try to land was Vulcan XM558, which gave a pre-arranged fly-past.” I’ll bet the Vulcan crew couldn’t resist that invitation!

I met somebody in early 2012 who was quite certain that BARTON ASHES was used by Lysanders by the Special Operations Executive during WW2. Can this be confirmed?
