Pencraig
PENCRAIG: Private airstrip
Operated by: Ray Everitt (Dragon Aviation)
Location: Just NW of Pencraig village, W of the B4391, roughly 8nm NW of Llanfyllin
Period of operation: From early 2000s only. Probably no longer operating (2020)
Runway: Roughly NNE/SSW 200 grass
NOTES: Dragon Aviation were in 2012, (and might still well be?), the UK agents for the Aeroprakt Foxbat which is built in the Ukraine. In 2012 I had collected the Foxbat G-OUDA owned by Andrew Cattell from Marugan aerodrome in north central Spain who travelled with me in my truck to collect it. The Foxbat had been damaged by a freak tornado during the World Microlight Championships being held at Marugan. It had lifted a marquee, together with sundry catering equipment and Andrew's wife into the air and dumped it on the well picketed G-OUDA, causing enough damage to render it unflyable. Incredibly his wife emerged unscathed.
Arriving at Dragon Aviation I have never seen such a short rough strip in a more unlikely place to commit aviation. Testament indeed that the Foxbat is a remarkable and tough performer. The strip is in a deep valley and runs uphill NNE, probably the only available landing direction?
PICTURES FROM THE JOB
As you might image a fair amount of damage to my truck occurred making this delivery. But for me that was part and parcel of the job. If the the truck could be squeezed in amongst the hedges, branches and hidden rocks in the verges, I'd give it my best try.
