Aylestone Road
Note: From doing a bit of research, I do now reckon this map shows the probable site. However, if anybody can kindly confirm this is actually the correct location, this advice will be much appreciated.
AYLESTONE ROAD: Temporary flying ground
Location: Old County Cricket Ground, Aylestone Road, about 2.25nm S to SSW of Leicester city centre
Period of operation: 30th November 1912, and 18th January 1913
In October 2025. Mike Holder. a great friend of this 'Guide'. discovered this advert placed in the Leicester Daily Post on the 18th January 1913.
NOTES: Gustav Hamel took off from here in November 1912 to undertake the first ever British newspaper delivery flight. He flew his ‘cargo’ to Loughborough. This wasn't of course the first 'air cargo' flight in the UK. It now appears that he returned to undertake a display of flying on the 18th January 1913. (See advert above).
However, it now seems he returned to Aylestone to conduct displays, from the 6th to 9th May 1914, but, at a different venue location. We can't be certain of course, but it seems likely that this venue was probably the same as that later used by the Berkshire Aviation Company in 1919?
