BALLY’S STRIP: Private airstrip (Aka LANE FARM and PAINSCASTLE)

Location: S of the B4594, roughly 0.5nm NE of Painscastle, and roughly 4nm NW of Hay-on-Wye
Runway: 06/24 635 grass
Note: In an AAIB report, in 2018, the runway length was given as 730 metres. This seems absurd as the maximum run is 670 metres and there is a tree in the centre of the runway at the western end. We are very fortunate to have the AAIB in the U.K., but perhaps understandably, many errors occur regarding GA accidents and reportable incidents.
NOTES: This strip was mentioned in an article in Popular Flying magazine (Sept 2007) because John Bally had developed a system for storing aircraft by suspending them in the roof void of his hangar. An idea sometimes found in Europe but possibly unique in the UK?
