Barnes flying sites
Note: This map gives only my rough estimation of where the Ranelagh croquet and polo ground was situated. A more exact location will be much very welcome. This said, the map does indicate where BARNES is located within Greater London.
BARNES: Balloon ascent venue
Operated by: The Aero Club
Location: Ranelagh croquet and polo ground, (there is today a Ranelagh Avenue in Barnes on the north side of Barnes Common).
Period of operation: From 1903
NOTES: In 1903 the Aero Club introduced Saturday balloon races launched from the polo ground. I have found another report which states the first balloon race took place on the 7th July 1905.
BARNES: Temporary heliport
Operated by: Westland Aircraft + Rotor Stations
Location: Harrods sports ground
Period of operation: May 1950 (9th to 19th)
NOTES: This is claimed to be the first scheduled helicopter service in the UK. Operating two flights a day to CASTLE BROMWICH carrying passengers to the British Industries Fair using the Westland-Sikorsky S-51 G-ALIK with Capt Kenneth Reed in command. The flight time was about 75 minutes.
