Ben Johnsons Fields
Note: Even today this area east of Stepney still has places named after Ben Jonson. If anybody can kindly provide a more exact location, this advice will be most welcome.
BEN JONSON'S FIELDS: Balloon ascent venue
Operated by: The Commercial Gas Company in conjunction with Charles Green
Location: Just east of Stepney
Period of operation: 6th October 1840
NOTES: At some point in 1840 the Commercial Gas Company arranged for Charles Green to bring his 'Nassau' balloon across from its usual venue at VAUXHALL GARDENS. Charles Green was perhaps the most famous aeronaut of the first half of the nineteenth century and it is claimed that he made 526 ascents.
