Benone flying sites
Note: This map only gives a rough idea where gliding takes place on these sands.
BENONE: Gliding Site
NOTES: It appears that the sands were first used by the Ulster Gliding Club in the 1930s. Now named the Ulster Gliding Centre and based at BELLARENA, these sands and other sands at MAGILLIGAN STRAND and DOWNHILL are still in regular use, and very popular with visitors. Not just by glider pilots either, but spectators comprised of tourists and casual locals etc.
I can highly recommend a look at the Ulster Gliding Centre web-site which provides a fascinating account of the Club's history.
BENONE STRAND: Private airstrip?
Location: N of A2, 1nm NE of Benone
Period of operation: 1980s only?
NOTES: The location of the strip being "1nm NE of Benone" puts it in the sea! I wonder if somebody saw a glider tug, landing or taking-off on the beach, from a distance, and simply assumed that there must therefore be an airstrip in the vicinity?
