BENTRA: Site of a portable RNAS airship shed in 1917
Aka LARNE and WHITEHEAD
Mooring-out Station for RNAS LUCE near Stranraer
Location: “Near Whitehead, 8 miles south of Larne”
NOTES: It appears the primary duty of the airship housed here was to escort the Princess Maud which left Stranraer each morning.
The crews of the coastal airships must have felt that they were pretty much wasting their time undertaking such futile duties. It was rare if the sighting of a German U-boat occurred and the chances of a successful attack was virtually nil.
However, it was learnt after WW1, from the German U-boat captains, that they had in fact been very successful. Especially because of their size these airships were easily spotted from a distance, and knowing that they carried bombs, they prevented many attacks on shipping being carried out.
