Bibury
BIBURY: Originally a RLG later military aerodrome
Military user: RAF: Fighter Command in 1940 at least?
(1940): ‘A’ Flight of 92 Sqdn detached from main base at LLANELLI (Spitfires)
By 1944: RAF Maintenance Command
57 Wing Storage Unit
Location: 6nm NE of Cirencester
Period of operation: 1939 to 1945 (1940 to 1945 according to some records)
Runways: Grass with steel matting, (Somerfield Track).
04/22 1046 10/28 1074 18/36 1828
NOTES: Used as a RLG (Relief Landing Ground) by SOUTH CERNEY from April 1939
Please read Brian Kingcome’s autobiography, A Willingness To Die, which I would highly recommend for anybody interested in WW2 aviation history, especially Fighter Command. His descriptions of operating out of BIBURY in 1940 with Spitfires makes for exciting reading. So typical of so much military top-brass planning, highly dangerous for those involved, and a nigh on useless exercise.
