BIRCH GROVE HOUSE: Temporary airfield

Sir Harold discussing Don Lord's Jodel D11 in 1978
Sir Harold discussing Don Lord's Jodel D11 in 1978

Operated by: Sir Harold MacMillan

Location:  S of Birchgrove Road and W of the A275. Roughly NW of Chelwood Gate and about 4.5nm S of East Grinstead

Period of operation:  Late 1970s until the mid 1980s.

NOTE: Sir Harold MacMillan (1894 - 1986) was the British Prime Minister from January 1957 to October 1963, and Birch Grove House was his home until his death.

In an article featuring Don Lord in the February 2018 edition of Light Aviation magazine, he tells us that Sir Harold once hosted popular fly-ins in the grounds of Birch Grove House. And provided a picture to prove it.

Just poking its tail in, on the right-hand side of the picture is the Boeing (Stearman) A75N1 G-AZLE.
