BIRCOTES: Originally military WW1 airfield perhaps?
Later civil Landing Ground also known as BAWTRY?
Location: 1nm SW of Bawtry, W of A614, S of A638 junction
Period of operation: WW1 perhaps? Certainly 1930s
Runway: Max landing run: 475 grass
NOTES: Info source – ‘AA Landing Grounds’ publication, 1930s. It is in here that the mention is made that this airfield is on the site of BIRCOTES airfield. Apparently still shown on maps circa 1942. Probably the same site as used in WW2? The main problem with the AA Landing Ground info is that just up the road at Bawtry Hall there was another AA approved Landing Ground and it would therefore appear rather unlikely to have two sites so close together? Or is it? See listing for BAWTRY HALL.
