Bishop Rock

BISHOP ROCK:  Lighthouse helipad

The Bolkow Bo105 G-BATC on BISHOP ROCK
The Bolkow Bo105 G-BATC on BISHOP ROCK

Operated by:  Trinity House

Location: On Bishop Rock, the westernmost point in the Isles of Scilly

Period of operation:  1976 to -

NOTES: The original lighthouse was never lit, being swept away in a storm. The existing lighthouse was built in 1858 and has of course been modified quite a bit since. Due to the difficulties of supplying the lighthouse keepers by sea, the helipad was installed on top of the lighthouse in 1976. It became fully automatic in 1999.

BISHOP ROCK is 'officially' recognised by the Guiness Book of Records as being the worlds smallest island, by virtue of having a permanent structure.
