Military users: USAAF 9th Air Force, IX Tactical Command, 70th Fighter Wing, 371st Fighter Group
404th, 405th & 406th Fighter Sqdns (Republic P-47 Thunderbolts)
Location: 1.5nm S of Ringwood
Period of operation: 1943 to 1944
Note: Other accounts appear to indicate that these dates are incorrect, and indeed it does appear that this airfield was only operational from March 1944 - and closed in the summer that year after the D-Day landings. So, did this airfield have the shortest operational life of all airfields in WW2?
Runways: Somerfield Track steel matting; 02/20 1463 grass
NOTES: It appears confirmed that this airfield was only used by the USAAF from March to July 1944 and that the ‘runway’, (I have only one listed), was removed by 1945.
The reason for calling this ALG BISTERNE is quite simple. Airfields in WW2, (and probably before in most cases?) were named after the nearest Post Office with a telegraph connection.
