Black Bourton
BLACK BOURTON: Private airstrip
Note: The first picture was obtained from Google Earth © and shows the airstrip in red and the house Nigel Halladay lived is in yellow. The area view is from my Google Earth © derived database.
Operated by: Mr John Stewart-Wood
Location: Just NE of Black Bourton village on the B4020, just S of RAF BRIZE NORTON and about 6nm SSE of Burford and 5nm N of Faringdon
Period of operation: 1970s and 1980s only?
NOTES: In 1976/7 the Piper PA-34 Seneca 200T-11 G-BDRI, (ex SE-GLG), registered to Aylesbury Mushrooms Ltd was based here.
In 2020 I was very kindly contacted by Mr Graham Frost who is a great friend of this 'Guide'. He tells us that the Reims-Cessna FR.172F Rocket, G-AWWU, and the Cessna 182P Skylane G-BAMJ were also based here.
He also remembers a Jodel here one weekend being used for aerial photography of tumuli around the Black Bourton area. Hardly an ideal type for aerial photography I would say.
MORE INFORMATION
In January 2024 I was kindly contacted by Mr Nigel Halladay who used to live close to this airstrip. He has provided three photographs of aircraft based here taken by Ken Hayes that he obtained from the Air Britain Photographic Images Collection.
The Piper PA-28R-200 Cherokee Arrow, G-BAAR, is of interest. It was also registered to Aylesbury Mushrooms Ltd, (from 04.08.72 to 20.04.76), and was flown to and from Australia by John Stewart-Wood. (Note kangaroo motif on fuselage side). But, it now appears it was originally registered as G-AZYO on 07.07.72 to Aylesbury Mushrooms.
