Blackshaw Moor
Note: This map gives only a general location.
BLACKSHAW MOOR: Military airstrip
(Known as CAMP BLACKSHAW MOOR)
Military user: US 635th Field Artillery Battalion
Location: Near Leek
Period of operation: One day operational in January 1945
NOTES: It appears that a couple of senior non-flying officers nominated the strip against the wishes of the pilots but they were ordered to use it. Three out of four attempting to land crashed and the strip was then abandoned.
It seems to be an odd trait of military establishments, that utter fools can rise to positions of senior rank - without any opposition along the way. So, how does this work?
