BOLTON: Balloon ascents

NOTES: It appears that on the 11th September 1826, (see poster below, probably the 30th?), the then famous aeronaut Charles Green made an ascent from Bolton. It seems he landed in Chadderton near Oldham. Is anything now known as to where this ascent took place?

Note:  As the saying goes, 'Seek and ye shall find'. Doesn't often work of course, but, in this case several years later after posing the question, in early 2023 I was very kindly contacted by Mr Jon Taylor who has a copy of the original poster. So now we know - it was from the gas works. In those days, and during most of the 19th century, balloon launches were quite common from gas works. Because, coal gas, being mostly the lifting agent of choice, was becoming increasingly available around the country - and - relatively cheap.

It also appears that in September 1860, Henry Wells Coxwell made an ascent from the junction of Bradshawgate and Trinity Street.

BOLTON: Temporary aerodrome?     (See seperate entry for Sir Alan Cobham at LOSTOCK)

NOTES: Used by the Berkshire Aviation Co in March 1920.

On the 9th August 1933 Sir Alan  Cobham’s No.2 Tour visited Bolton. Did they both use the same location? The Cobham 1934 Tour also displayed in/near Bolton on the 25th April and returned on the 25th July that year.

Could anybody now kindly give advice on the venues used, and their locations?
