Bovington Camp
BOVINGTON CAMP: Military airstrip? Helicopter RLG (Relief Landing Ground)
Operated by: It appears mainly used by RN (Royal Navy) helicopters from PORTLAND, or so it would seem from the very few records available. But surely Army helicopters too?
Location: NE of Bovington Camp, just W to NW of EYRES FIELD gliding site
Period of operation: 1960s certainly it seems, presumably until PORTLAND closed in 1997?
NOTES: I met a gentleman at TARRANT RUSHTON airfield, (or the remains of), in April 2009 who had once worked in BOVINGTON CAMP which is a large Army base. He was certain a hard runway had been constructed within the camp. Later used for car racing.
A look at the site on Google Earth in 2017 (image date 2008) certainly does appear to reveal a hard strip, now partly overgrown, orientated 15/33 and 450 metres long with 'turning circles' at both ends. But, was it really a runway, and if so, was it ever used by fixed-wing aircraft?
