Bracknell
BRACKNELL: Corporate helipads
Note: These pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©
Operated by: Ferranti
Location: Just S of the B3408, N of the A322 and just roughly W of Bracknell town centre
Period of operation: ?
NOTES: I have Mr Graham Frost to thank for this information. If anybody can kindly offer advice, this will be most welcome. The nature of the site has changed quite dramatically over the years, and Graham tells us it was once a 7 acre triangular field.
What I suspect is much less known is this information from Graham:
"One of Sebastian de Ferranti's first rotorcraft was the Westland S-51 Widgeon G-APVD. The aircraft was used to test a variety of instruments being manufactured by Ferranti Electronics (from their Bracknell factory) which produced, among other things; flight instrument packages (ie. VSI, AH, ASI, turn and slip etc), auto-stabilisation (SAS), flight director guidance and auto-pilot coupling. The craft was also utilised as Sebastion's personal mount."
As Graham explains, regarding the above, it certainly explain why he had seen the Widgeon at the rear of the site, between the factory buildings.
We'd love to hear from you, so please scroll down to leave a comment!
