Brecqhou Island
Note: This map only gives the position of Brecqhou Island within the Channel Islands.
BRECQHOU ISLAND: Private helipads and, it appears a gyrocopter airstrip
Location: One at W end of island, the other at the E end, BRECQHOU ISLAND is 6.5nm ESE of St Peter Port on Guernsey
Landing area: Both concrete and 17m diameter
Period of operation: 1960s to today
NOTES: Helicopters have been landing on Brecqhou Island since the 1960s using pretty much the same locations but on grass before the permanent concrete helipads were laid in 1994. It appears there was one concrete helipad before 1994 but it wasn’t in an ideal location so isn’t now used.
A PERSONAL MEMORY
In July 2000 I was given the job of collecting the Wombat Autogyro G-WBAT from Crowthorne in Berkshire and taking it to Portsmouth to be loaded, on my own and single-handed, and secured into a shipping container. Which took a bit of thinking about, a shipping container hardly being ideal for the job.
Once this was completed it was ready for shipment via Guernsey to Brecqhou. Everything went very well at my end given some thought and time, and, not hearing any complaints, it seems fair to assume it was later being flown from the island.
In 2016 I discovered that this aircraft is now on display in the Helicopter Museum at Weston-super-Mare.
