NOTES: It would appear that the AA arranged this emergency landing ground just to help flying members using this route to attend the TT races on the Isle of Man. This does of course suggest that this LG may well have been available for use over a longer period that just the 1930s. Or, was it for a shorter period? Can anybody confirm this?
It appears that this minimal Landing Ground with no hangarage was available in both 1930 and it appears in a 1933 directory. Fuel and a telephone were available from County Garage and transport (typically a taxi service) from the Auld King’s Arms Hotel in Castle Street, Stranraer, which also had accommodation of course. Other accommodation in Stranraer was available from the Buck’s Head and the George.
The Auld King’s Arms is now housing but the Buck’s Head and the George, (now the George Metro Hotel), were still in business in 2013. It also appears that Bridge of Aird Farm is still being run by the Love family and indeed, the present day contact is also an Andrew.
