Notes: A look on Google maps in 2016 identified Llwyn-y-Cosn-Mawr farm in exactly the place I was looking for. Could anybody kindly confirm that this is the same site as the Llwyn-y-Cosn farm mentioned below?
BRYNFORD: Forced landing site
NOTES: Here again just another mention to reinforce just how many hundreds if not thousands of farm fields have been used for forced landings especially by the British military forces in the earlier years; a process that still regularly goes on even today but mainly involving light fixed-wing aircraft and microlights!
In this case yet another Bristol F.2b developed engine trouble due to a oil filler tank bursting. I now begin to wonder if the Bristol F.2B Fighter and it’s Rolls-Royce (Falcon?) engine are as deserving of the accolades we now pour upon the type?
I have often read that the F.2B had, “a powerful and reliable Rolls Royce engine”, but have since seen numerous accounts of the engine/systems regularly failing in flight. In this case it seems that J6706 made a ‘heavy’ landing on Llwyn-y-cosyn Farm.
This account came from the most excellent 2nd volume of ‘Wings Across the Borders’ books by Derrick Pratt & Mike Grant. Shortly after reading this account they make another observation which really does make me question just what was going on during the period following WW1 at least.
It appears the Avro 504K piloted by F/O Newham with LAC Searle as observer, was flying around near Great Orme to spot and escort an incoming Irish flight to RAF SHOTWICK when it had severe engine problems and made a forced landing between Llanfairlechan and Gorddinog.
Now then, why exactly was this escort arranged? Surely only the most stupid incompetent pilot(s) could fail to identify RAF SHOTWICK. In navigation terms possibly few other aerodromes are easier to find. Needless to say despite the absence of an escort those pilots did it in fact find RAF SHOTWICK and safely landed there.
