Burgh Castle
Note: THis map only gives a rough location within the UK. According to various sources there appears to be a 'disconnect' between the land based airfield and the water site. If anybody can kindly offer advice on this, it will be much appreciated.
BURGH CASTLE: Military Landing Ground and Flight Station, also Marine Operations Station
The aerial view was obtained from Google Earth ©. The local area and area views are from my Google Earth © derived database.
Please note that not all, by any means, of flying sites listed in this 'Guide' are pinned on my database.
Military users: 1915 to 1918 Flight Station for RNAS (Royal Naval Air Service)
1918 to 1919 RAF Marine Operations Station
Location: About 4nm SW of Great Yarmouth town centre, and alongside the River Waveney
Period of operation: 1915 to 1919
Site area: Land: 50 acres Water: River Waveney
NOTES: I have yet to discover exactly where the RAF Marine Operations Station was located. My best guess is that it was where the marina on the River Waveney is today. Had hoped to see on Google Earth evidence of a WW1 slipway - assuming that there was one? Have found several locations where WW1 slipways still exist as they are very expensive to demolish, and of course can still be used for boating purposes. Perhaps this one was built over when creating the marina? If anybody can kindly offer advice, this will be most welcome.
