Note: This map only shows the position of Burton-on-the-Wolds village within the UK. If anybody can kindly give advice, this will be much appreciated.
BURTON-ON-THE-WOLDS: Military Landing Ground much later microlight strip
Military user: RFC (Royal Flying Corps)
38 [Home Defence] Sqdn (Royal Aircraft Factory F.E.2b, and possibly remnants of their B.E.2c types?)
Later briefly; 90 Sqdn (Avro 504, Royal Aircraft Factory F.E.2b & Sopwith Pups)
Note: I have no idea which of these types were flown here.
Location: South side of B676 Six Hills to Burton-on-the-Wolds Road adjacent to Leys Farm roughly 3nm ENE of Loughborough town centre
Period of operation: 1916 to 1919 later civil from around 2000 to 2007
Site area in WW1: Roughly a back-to-front ‘L’ shaped 27 acres 457 x 91
Runway: It appears that in 2007 microlights were using one grass runway, aligned roughly N/S
NOTES: Originally a ‘night-landing ground’ in 1916 it was soon degraded to a second class landing ground for day use and third class landing ground for night use!
In or around 2000 it seems some microlight flying activity took place and continued until 2007 at least.
