BUTLEY: Experimental Station

Military users: RAF Experimental Station, Acoustic Experimental Station, Marine Operations Station
 

Location: In/near and probably W of Butley village on the B1084 about 4nm ENE of Woodbridge. Now part of the area known as Rendlesham Forest this site is roughly S of what became the huge BENTWATERS Air Base


Period of operation: 1918 to 1919

 

Site area: 44 acres    503 x 411

 

NOTES: The recently formed RAF (Royal Air Force) used this site for inspecting and air testing captured enemy aircraft.
