Cluntoe
CLUNTOE: Military RAF aerodrome later Royal Naval Air Station (1948 Books of HMS GANNET)
These two pictures are from my Google Earth © derived database.
Military users: Initially RAF, later Fleet Air Arm
Note: I appears that this facility was also used by the USAAF. Possibly, perhaps (?), the USAF too. The USAAF, (United States Army Air Force), became the USAF, (United States Air Force), on the 26th September 1947.
Activities: Late in WW2: Care and Maintenance
Later used by 2 FTS (Flying Training School) (Percival Prentice & North American T-6 Harvards)
See comment below.
Location: Approx: 10nm WSW of Aldergrove & 10nm ESE of Cookstown
Period of operation: 1942 to 1955
Runways: WW2: 06/24 1828x46 hard 10/28 1280x46 hard
18/36 1280x46 hard
NOTES: I suppose it is stating the obvious to most, but for younger visitors to this 'Guide' perhaps it might be useful to explain that the reason so many 'Care & Maintenance' facilities were situated in Scotland, NW England and Northern Ireland was simply because they were further away from possible enemy bombing attacks.
