DUNBAR: Temporary aerodrome?
Date unknown (?), showing the location of the racecourse. We do not know if this was the venue for either of the events listed below. But, from the earliest years of powered aviation in the UK, and before WW2, racecourses were regarded as being ideal venues for an air display.
NOTES: On the 24th July 1933 Sir Alan Cobham’s No.2 Tour displayed in/near Dunbar which is just N of the A1 roughly 25nm E of Edinburgh. Is the exact location now known? Did they perhaps use the disused WW1 airfield at SOUTH BELTON? Or, as now seems more probable (?), the racecourse used just a few months later, on the 17th September by the British Hospitals Air Pageant tour?
This location being just NW of West Barnes village on the A1087, about 2nm W of Dunbar town centre.
THE ROUGH LOCATION?
Even though assuming that the racecourse was the venue for both events, I have added these three pictures to give you some idea of the area.
These three pictures are from my Google Earth © derived database.
