Egilsay
EGILSAY: Regional 'airport'
Note: The first three items were kindly provided by Mr Michael T Holder. I have added the area view.
Operated by: Loganair, Air Orkney
Location: On the W side of Egilsay, just W of Onziebust village. About 10.5nm NNE of Kirkwall town centre
Period of operation: 1979 to 1981
Runways: 01/19 485 grass 14/32 300 grass
NOTES: I can take no credit for this listing. Mike Holder who is a great friend of this 'Guide' did all the work. He tells us that the airfield opened on the 23rd February 1979 and was intended to be used for air ambulance and charter flights. It appears that G-AYXK, the IRMA BN.2A Islander operated by Loganair was the first aircraft to land here.
Clearly the demand for either service was minimal if not nigh on non-existent, so use was discontinued in 1981.
