Operated by: Dorset Gliding Club

Location: Nearly halfway between Wool and Bere Regis, S of Gallows Hill, NE of Bovington Army Camp

Period of operation: 1960 initially, (for a short time), returning in 1992

Runway: Between runway markers: 18/36   381   grass        (Approx TODA/LDA 953 metres?)

NOTES: According to the DGC website the ‘second’ Dorset Gliding Club started here in 1960 but was lost when the owners decided to extract the gravel. It appears the first gliding site was at LULWORTH in the 1930s. A move was made to Cdr. Kidston’s private airstrip, (situated where?), but this was too small, the clubs only two-seater ending up in a boundary hedge. The Club then moved to TARRANT RUSHTON in late 1965 or early 1966. Since then the club has operated from HENSTRIDGE, OLD SARUM and YEOVILTON.

It appears the name of this present day airfield is a homage to Mr Norman Eyres, a key founder member in getting the club back to their original and independant operating site in 1960.
