Flixton Hill
FLIXTON HILL: Gliding site
These three pictures are from my Google Earth © based database.
Operated by: Scarborough Gliding Club
Location: Just S of Flixton village on the A1039, about 5.5nm S of Scarborough town centre
Period of operation: 1930 to ?
NOTES: We have Mr Graham Frost, a great friend of this 'Guide', to thank for pointing out this location.
The British Gliding Association had been formed just the year before, in 1929, and this club was one of the first members. They operated at weekends and Wednesday afternoons, and, achieved a major coup by having Amy Johnson agreeing to become the club President. Initially they had just one Dagling glider, presumably towed off by willing members running along tugging a long bungee chord? But as they progressed, were also flying from SUTTON BANK.
If anybody can kindly offer more information, this will be much appreciated. Plus of course, if any pictures exist, these will be very welcome.
