Fordoun
FORDOUN: Military aerodrome later civil/private airfield (SLG for RAF PETERHEAD)
Note: All three of these pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©
Military users: RAF Flying Training Command
WW2: SLG [Satellite Landing Ground)
Note: It appears that 2 FIS [Flying Instructors School] based at RAF MONTROSE had a Flight of Airspeed Oxfords based here.
1632 Flight, based here initially it seems, were flying Airspeed Oxfords, a few Hawker Hurricanes later on, Miles Martinets and Westland Lysanders for gunnery practise and radar calibration tests. They later became part of 598 Squadron at RAF PETERHEAD.
Location: SE of Monboddo, W of A94, 9nm SW of Stonehaven
Period of operation: Military 1942 to 1945
Private flying recorded in 1965, 1977 and 1985
Note: It appears that a flying club was established here in 1967. Can anybody help out here?
Runways: WW2: 17/35 1006x46 hard 06/24 1372x46 hard
NOTES: In WW2 six ‘double fighter’ hardstandings were provided. Why?
A SINGULAR ROLE
More research on the web has revealed that RAF FORDOUN was selected to take part in 'Operation Tyndall', an exercise in 1943 designed to convince the Nazi regime that a serious threat to Norway was underway. This entailed placing dummy Douglas Bostons on the airfield.
As stated elsewhere in this 'Guide', the amount of subterfuge involved in the Second World War is quite staggering. Let alone all the stuff going on 'behind the scenes' devised by boffins, etc, etc.
GA AT FORDOUN
In 1977 it seems that only the DHC.1 Chipmunk 22 G-AOSZ and Cessna 182J G-AVID of the Inch Farming Co were based here.
