FURNESS ABBEY: Temporary Landing Ground (Aka MANOR FARM)
This was the final destination in England for Henri Salmet's 1912 Tour, sponsored by the Daily Mail. Starting at WORMWOOD SCRUBBS in London on the 16th May, Salmet visited 61 venues, (three twice), ranging across from Kent to Cornwall, south Wales and the Midlands.

Note: The second item was published in Soulby's Ulverston Advertiser and General Intelligencer on the 5th September. After leaving Preston on the 31st August, Salmet made a brief visit to Ulverston, which is about 6nm NE of FURNESS ABBEY.

This really was a most extraordinary period, largely ignored and forgotten about today. Once practical flying machines were designed and developed, many very brave, (or foolish?), individuals risked life and limb to get airborne. Some mastered their machines to such an extent they had the confidence to perform exhibitions of flying in front of huge crowds, and very soon became 'super stars', féted wherever they went.
