Fyvie
FYVIE: Private airfield
Note: The dating system on Google Earth is notoriously unreliable so these are just a rough guide. The area view is from my Google Earth © derived database.
Operated by: Mr William (Bill) Jan Miazek
Location: About 1nm W of the A947, About 2.5nm S of Fyvie village and roughly 9.5nm SSE of Turriff town centre
Period of operation: Not known exactly (?) but from around 2019 to -
Runways:
This private airfield has a most unusual arrangement, perhaps unique in the UK? I am of course assuming that I have identified them correctly? This said, the layout does make a lot of sense. The 01/19 360 grass - runway being laid out after 2019. Before that:
15/33 300 grass Two apparent options: 06/24 (West) 390 grass 06/24 (East) 350 grass
NOTES: We have Mr Graham Frost, a great friend of this 'Guide', to thank for pointing out this location, and telling us that the Bristell NG5 Speedwing, G-CMTV, had been based here.
So, it seemed a good time to brush the dust off my patented Sherlock Holmes detective kit, complete with deerstalker hat, spyglass and 12 inch metric converter, to investigate further. Was very glad that I did because a remarkable story emerged.
Mr Miazek owns Aberdeen Trailers Ltd, and decided to accomplish a long held ambition to learn to fly in 2017. Having already owned three aircraft already, and flying around Europe, plus having visited the EAA extravaganza airshows in Oshkosh - he decided to build the ideal type to fly over 'the pond' and arrive there himself.
With the help of a friend he built G-CMTV in just five months. Itself a quite remarkable achievement as it was far from being a standard version. Needing an extra long-range fuel tank to be fitted in the cockpit for example. In July 2014 he accomplished his dream, flying 4812 miles, clocking 39 hours 6 minutes flight time. And to think, I thought I was doing well, on my 60th birthday in 2007, to fly the long way round to the Algarve in southern Portugal. (Albeit with a lot of help with a good friend, then a senior captain with B.A,)
It has always been a joy for me, (especially since researching this 'Guide'). to learn that others have had far, far more ambitious projects. Indeed, in their own way, ever since powered fixed wing aircraft were being designed and developed in the early years of the 20th century.
