Inkpen

Note: This map only shows the position of Inkpen village within the UK. If anybody could kindly provide a more exact location for the gliding site, this advice will be much appreciated.

In April 2020 I was kindly contacted by Mr Tony Hine who informed me that the site I thought this might be is actually the one I have listed as RIVAR HILL. Most of the information has been moved across.

INKPEN: Gliding site (also known as INKPEN RIDGE)

Period of operation: 1970s only? (Listed as closing in 1977)

Hi, I was doing a bit of research on this for my gliding club, Shalbourne Gliding. As I understand it the Inkpen gliding club was based at the Inkpen airfield from 1968 - 1976. The original club moved to Thruxton in 1976 and shut down in 1995. Shalbourne gliding was founded in 1980. Originally based at the Inkpen site, at some point it was moved to Rivar Hill on the same ridge. If you ever find a grid reference for the Inkpen site please let me know, as nobody at the club seems to know where the original airfield was. Regards, Darren
