Invergarry
INVERGARRY: Private airstrip
Note: All four of these pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©
Location: Just E of the A82, on the SE side of Invergarry village, about 7nm SSW of Fort Augustus and roughly 21nm NNE to NE of Fort William town centre
Period of operation: (?) But still operational in 2021?
Runway: 04/22 400 grass
NOTES: We have to thank Mr Graham Frost, a great friend of this 'Guide' for pointing out this location.
It is interesting in as much as it appears to have no local function, such as being a base for a privately owned aircraft, and has no obvious connection to a nearby vacation facility?
This said, and I could of course be barking up the wrong tree here, many minimal airstrips were laid out across the northern reaches of Scotland to serve air ambulance services, from the 1930s. After WW2 it seems that many more became semi-permanent features, especially by the use of Britten-Norman Islanders.
Could this have been one of them?
