KIDSDALE: Military airfield (Aka BURROW HEAD)
Military user: Range Landing Ground for WEST FREUGH
Location: NE of Kidsdale village, roughly 2.5nm SSW of Whithorn
Period of operation: WW2 only?
NOTES: One interesting aspect that appears when in looking into this site, is that Queen Bees were being operated for target practise - almost certainly from 1939 to 1942? These were radio-controlled de Havilland DH.82 Tiger Moths and it seems that they were launched, equipped with floats from a catapult similar to those used on naval ships.
Those that survived were landed on the sea and retrieived at the Isle of Whithorn harbour, then having the floats (and presumably the wings as well?), removed and the standard undercarriage fitted so they could be towed back by road to KIDSDALE. It appears that the average life expectancy of a Queen Bee was eight flights.
