Maltings Farm
MALTINGS FARM: Private airstrip/airfield
These three pictures are from my Google Earth© derived database.
Location: S & E of the A12 (Colchester by-pass), E of junction 27. W of Colchester in the northern part of the suburb of Lexden
Period of operation: 1960s to 1980s only?
NOTES: If you look at Maltings Farm on Google Earth today it seems hard to believe there could have been an airstrip here. As in so many other locations listed in this 'Guide', yet another example of the colossal amount of development that has taken place, especially since the 1980s, as regional towns have expanded. But, I think the field used might well still exist?
Mr Graham Frost, a great friend of this 'Guide', tells us that the Taylorcraft Plus D, G-AHXE (ex LB312), was registered to Mr Joseph E Stephenson at this address from 25.04.66 until 17.01.73. I may of course be entirely mistaken but the field in the first picture above, with landing runs of E/W 470, and N/S of 450 metres would be more than adequate for operating a Taylorcraft Plus D from. If anybody can kindly offer advice, this will be much appreciated.
