Mardyke
MARDYKE: Temporary exhibition of flying venue
Operated by: Lord Carbery
Location: Roughly 1nm W to WSW of Cork city centre
Period of operation: Unknown exactly? Accounts seem to vary. It appears he flew up from CLONAKILTY, (see seperate listing), roughly 25nm SW of Cork on the 6th July 1914. But, it would appear, did not display until the 9th? It then seems, (perhaps?), that he gave other displays, possibly until the 16th.
A MICHAEL T HOLDER GALLERY
We have Mike Holder, a great friend of this 'Guide', to thank for both finding this venue and then discovering various items to illustrate it.
The excerpt is from Cork 365, day to day miscellany of Cork History by Sean Beecher.
PICTURES FROM THE CORK WEEKLY EXAMINER
These pictures were published in the 18th July edition.
WHAT THE PAPERS HAD TO SAY
Article One was published in the Evening Echo (Cork) on the 7th July. The Article Two, in two parts, was published in the Cork Weekly Examiner on the 11th July.
NOTE: In the Article Two please note that the editorial team had not noticed, (perhaps full of a certain popular brand of stout from a lunchtime session?), that the flight was actually from CLONAKILTY to CORK!
The photo of the 'Flying Ground', actually the Mardyke Football Ground, is from Sport in Cork, a History, by Donal O'Sullivan. The area view is from my Google Earth © derived database.
NOTE: I have no idea how this happens? But am not complaining. My contribution to this are just the two yellow pegs. As is if by magic, the image I have produced comes up with other flying sites pegged. The only point I would like to make is that during this period, Ireland, or Eire if you prefer, was still part of the United Kingdom. The Irish Free State coming into being in December 1922. Hence its inclusion in this 'Guide'.
