Nethercourt Flying Ground
NETHERCOURT FLYING GROUND: Civil aerodrome
Note: Also spelt NETHER COURT
Operated by: Thanet Aviation Ltd
This postcard of G-ABJF was kindly sent by Carolyn Oulton, Professor of Victorian Literature at Canterbury Chist Church University, in June 2025.
Note: Thanet Aviation Ltd was formed on the 25th February 1931. It appears they had one aeroplane (?), the Avro 504K, G-ABJF, and their pilot was Ernie Bicknell. However, it seems the company ceased trading after the end of their second 'season' in late 1932. But, G-ABJF was registered from 11.03.32 until May 1934. So - it seems reasonable to suppose that Thanet Aviation had at least one other aeroplane?
A MICHAEL T HOLDER GALLERY
Mike has also found this advert published in the Thanet Advertiser on the 24th March 1932. Hosted by Thanet Aviation Ltd, it appears an Air Pageant had been arranged for the 27th and 28th March 1932 featuring the Spartan Air Circus - an enterprise that seems to have escaped the notice of everybody we can find looking into the 'Flying Circus' era.
Note: The advert was published in the Thanet Advertiser 15th July 1932.
Interesting to note that, although by now married (?), Amy Johnson is still fêted by her maiden name. They married in 1932, but it wasn't a happy affair by and large.
Note: The newspaper article was published in the Thanet Advertiser on the 29th July 1932.
Location: London Road W of Ramsgate
Period of operation: Early 1930s to 1935 only? (Replaced by RAMSGATE airport)
NOTES: 99th venue (31st July & 1st August 1932) for Alan Cobham’s National Aviation Day UK Display Tour.
The next year (23rd August 1933) Alan Cobham’s No.2 Tour of the UK paid a visit.
BONUS PICTURE
Note: Mike Holder also sent this picture from Google Earth, which, has so often been the case in the U.K., in the years since WW2, shows the aerodrome site being totally consumed by residential suburbs.
