We have Mike Holder, a great friend of this 'Guide', to thank for both discovering this 'aerial adventure' and providing the following items to illustrate the listing. It is well worth inclusion in this 'Guide' for a few reasons. Firstly that the purpose of the flight was to see if a potential aerodrome could be established, but secondly, the aircraft concerned is so well illustrated. This being the Piper PA-22-160 Tri-Pacer, G-AREV (ex N9628D), which was registered to Air Navigation and Trading Co. Ltd at SQUIRES GATE, Blackpool, from 27.04.67 to 27.11.72.

NOTES: I cannot claim to be a highly experienced pilot, but as a private pilot I have interfered with the controls of over sixty different types or major variants. And, have landed at over 200 locations ranging from major international airports to farm strips. So, in my humble opinion, I most certainly would not have chosen a Tri-Pacer for this sortie. Double so in those 'breezy' conditions.
The type was not designed for, nor intended to be used for, smallish off-field operations. Quite the opposite in the USA. Indeed, as I can testify having had an instructional flight in a PA-22-108 Colt, the PA-22 types do have a serious 'gotcha'. This being that if you seriously reduce the power on the approach to land, a very quick decent rate soon develops. Therefore it does not surprise me at all that eight attempts were made to land here.
