Northleach
NORTHLEACH: Military airfield
Military users: RAF Flying Training Command 23 Group
1942 (July) No.3 Glider Training School
Location: N of the old A40, W of the A429, NNW of Northleach and 12nm E of Cheltenham
Note: The A40 today runs right across this airfield site.
Period of operation: 1942 to 1945
Runways: NE/SW 686 grass E/W 960 grass
NOTES: It appears that initially NORTHLEACH was designated as an ELG (Emergency Landing Ground) until July 1942. But, by November 1942 it became a RLG (Relief Landing Ground) for STOKE ORCHARD with Miles Master glider tugs and General Aircraft Hotspur gliders being based on site.
Obviously a minor operation with just 103 RAF personnel based here in late 1944. But, by comparison at many modern gliding sites perhaps ten people at best are needed to run the operation even at busy times. So, was this a very busy gliding site in WW2?
It appears that the airfield was beset by waterlogging problems during rainy periods. Quite common in WW2 and exactly the same now of course - nothing has changed in the last hundred years (at least) - despite ill-informed and highly under-educated drivel merchants, (usually with a 'Mickey Mouse' degree from some so-called university trying very hard to prove otherwise). Such a shame they haven't been taught to learn from recorded history.
