PACKINGTON: Temporary airstrip
NOTES: I have found many accounts of airstrips being prepared for perhaps a one-off use and this is one. In this case it was for a pretty big aircraft, the Vickers Varsity VW197 destined for the Midland Air Scouts, the aircraft being delivered to ELMDON in January 1969.
However, by the time the airstrip had been prepared, the Varsity was rendered un-airworthy. No doubt a bitter blow to all who had worked so hard for this singular occasion. It seems a shame that nobody was invited to use it at least once, with a small private aircraft for example. Or, was it?
