Peacehaven
PEACEHAVEN: Gliding site
Location: Probably in the top (northern) end of the housing area in Peacehaven today?
NOTES: As is so often said, a picture is worth a thousand words - and this is a case in point. This picture from a postcard was very kindly sent by Mike Charlton, and to some extent it initially left me a tad baffled. I certainly didn't have a gliding site in Peacehaven listed until this picture came along, and attempts to confirm this location being used for gliding have so far failed. If anybody can kindly offer advice, this will be most welcome.
This said, in the background is a site that looks very much like a military airfield, and I would reckon this is, without any doubt, the WW1 TELSCOMBE CLIFFS aerodrome.
Much the same can be said regarding the Fokker glider. However, I did find a clip of a film of a Fokker glider, possibly an earlier version without any fuselage, and the highly distinctive fin/rudder arrangement was the same. Which seems to suggest that this model dates from the early 1920s?
I strongly suspect this was a site used by one of the antecedents to the Southdown Gliding Club?
