Location:  Just N of Abergavenny town centre

Period of operation:  22nd June 1963

NOTES:  As a general rule this 'Guide' does not list one-off helicopter landing sites - it would be an impossible task. But, it is important for this aspect to be recorded, so some exceptional examples, such as this one, are listed.

We have Mr Jonathan Horswell to thank for pointing out this location. He tells us: "Pen-y-Pound was used as a temporary helicopter landing ground on the 22nd June 1963 by John Lennon. The Beatles were playing in the Welsh town but Lennon had been in London for an appearence on the BBC television show Juke Box Jury. Taking-off from Battersea heliport he landed at Abergavenny Town Football Club's Pen-y-Pound ground at 9.50pm, and was driven straight to the Town Hall from there."

For those of us of a certain age, (I was fifteen at this point), the explosive arrival of The Beatles on the pop music scene in 1963 was phenomenal. Aided especially by television becoming widely available and much more reliable.
