Pennyhouse Lane
Note: This map shows, as is often the case today, how many early flying sites near to towns have been absorbed into expanding suburbs.
PENNYHOUSE LANE: Temporary aerodrome
Operated by: Berkshire Aviation Co
Location: Burnley Road, Accrington
Period of operation: 1st to 14th January 1921
NOTES: ‘Flying circus’ venue. This is interesting - I wonder how much business they drummed up in the middle of winter - flying passengers in open cockpits? Perhaps they did quite well because as a general rule joy-rides in those days were barely more than a low level circuit. But I believe, to some extent, depending on how much you could afford.
I have noticed that in the early years the 'flying circus' operators tended to stay in one location for several days. Later, the major operators normally only stayed put for a day or two, but often revisited when, presumably, the potential for earnings clearly warranted doing so.
