PENRITH: Temporary flying site
Operated by: Henri Salmet
Location: Adjacent to the golf course, on the northern outskirts of Penrith
Period of operation: Thursday 30th July, 1914
NOTES: At 6pm flying came to an abrupt end when a telegraph arrived telling Salmet that the French Government had ordered a general mobilisation and he should return to France at once. WW1 had just started in other words, and Britain followed five days later.
PENRITH: Temporary aerodrome?
NOTES: On the 21st July 1933 Sir Allan Cobham’s No.1 Tour displayed in/near Penrith whilst en route from Carlisle to MOUNTBATTEN, Barrow-in-Furness. Does anybody now know the exact location for this event? Surely it must have been a very special occurrence for local people in those days? The same question applies to Cobham’s 1934 Tour which displayed in/near Penrith on the 30th April.
