Pilling Sands
Note: The location pointer on this map is roughly halfway along PILLING SANDS
PILLING SANDS: Microlight landing site only?
Note: See also the KNOTT END-on-SEA entry
Note: All three of these pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©
The first picture shows an aircraft on the Sands, whereas the third picture shows an aircraft at a very low altitude (there appears to be a shadow?) - possibly when about to land to just after taking off? Or just revelling in some totally legal very low flying. For which this area of sand is ideal.
Location: Very roughly 2 to 15nm ENE of Fleetwood
NOTES: Initial info source AAIB report EW/C2007/04/03 and EW/G2008/09/16.
PILLING SANDS has been used to land on for several years especially by microlight pilots. Indeed, see the October 2009 edition of Light Aviation magazine, (page 12), for an account of how an instructor based at BROOK FARM near Garstang regularly teaches ‘engine out’ landings here.
We have Mr Graham Frost, a great friend of this 'Guide', for spotting this picture published in Flyer magazine in 2024. The Vans RV-6 is not of course a microlight, so was this the heaviest light aircraft to land on these sands?
