PLYMOUTH: Temporary aerodrome?
NOTES: In May 1931 CD Barnard Air Tours used a site in/near Plymouth as a venue. Did they use ROBOROUGH or somewhere else? The same question applies to where, on the 26th August 1933 Cobham’s No.1 Tour displayed in/near Plymouth?
PLYMOUTH: Military seaplane base
Operated by: RNAS
Location: Near Torpoint perhaps, or in Plymouth Sound?
Period of operation: 1916 to 1930s?
NOTES: In May 1919 a US Navy Curtiss ‘NC-4’ flying boat landed here, the sole survivor of three that set out, making it the first aircraft to fly across the Atlantic from West to East. The voyage took twelve days and routed from Trepassey Bay in Newfoundland via the Azores and Lisbon.
1st June 1926: Two RAF Supermarine Southampton flying boats apparenty departed from here (as distinct from MOUNT BATTEN) for the first long-distance tour of the Mediterranean. They returned on the 30th July.
