PONTELAND: Military Landing Ground

Military users: RFC (Royal Flying Corps) / RAF (Royal Air Force)

36 [Home Defence] Sqdn   (Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2c)

Location: S of the A696, about 1nm NW of Darras Hall, roughly 7nm NW of Newcastle-upon-Tyne city centre

Period of operation: 1916 to 1919

Site area: 56 acres    549 x 549

NOTES: Apparently used as a Night Landing Ground only.

However, although 36 Squadron were later to revert to training duties I would like to ask two questions. Firstly, given the extended period of operation, by WW1 standards for a minor airfield, were 36 Squadron the only users? And, did they only fly the B.E.2c type from here? If anybody could kindly give advice on these matters, this will be most welcome.
