Note: The first and third pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©. The second provided by Mr Graham Frost, a great friend of this 'Guide' who has provided the exact location.

Location: In/near Porthcurno which is situated in the extreme SW of CORNWALL about 2.5nm SE of Land’s End itself, not the airfield.

Runway: Open grass field

NOTES: The initial info source was the AAIB report EW/G99/06/26 concerning an ‘over-run’ incident involving an Antonov An-2, actually a PZL-Mielec built in Poland - but registered as LY-ASA.

The report states this incident happened at PORTHCURNO AIRSTRIP. But, it would appear (?), this was a once and only visit.

The circustances of the accident are not fully exlpained. Indeed, it would appear that landing roughly SSW or ENE, a run of 370 metres was available, and the landing run of an AN-2 is given as 170 metres.

Having flown the AN-2 under the expert tutoring of James Black, this seems easily achievable. So, what went wrong here?
