POST OFFICE TOWER: Adjacent helipad (Today known as the BT Tower)
NOTES: In May 1969 the Daily Mail sponsored a Transatlantic Air Race to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Alcock and Browns first crossing of the Atlantic ocean. Both the RAF and Royal Navy fielded teams and in the end the Royal Navy won with the McDonnell Phantom XT858 of 892 Squadron. The 'gates' were the top of the Empire State building in New York and the top of the Post Office Tower in central London.
The Phantom took off from Floyd-Bennett airfield and landed at WISLEY (SURREY) taking 4 hours 47 mins. Upon landing at WISLEY the Royal Navy Westland Wessex XT854 collected the navigator from the Phantom and flew him to a presumably temporary helipad adjacent to the Post Office Tower, the total elapsed time being 5 hours 11 minutes.
